for this project, each group was assigned the task of designing a bench which also performed another function. the bench required the ability to accomodate 3 people seated, standing, and reclining.
as we began exploring design strategies, one idea that became interesting was that of creating an experience that was unexpected when approaching the bench. we began exploring fabric and what it created as well as a type of "housing." the resultant of this process was a simple wood box exterior which opened up, and utilizes the tension between the sides to create a series of hammock-like seats, providing a relaxing lounge. utilizing the need for hinging, the open lounge also serves as an ab-lounge machine. _the booklet: along with developing the bench, as part of our presentation we had to develop a booklet explaining the bench and and provide technical drawings for what we created. for the booklet, i wanted to create an experience much like the bench itself, appearing as one thing, a standard (wood) booklet, while opening and transforming into a completely different experience on the interior (the accordian)
