the wall

for this assignment, we received a site that in a way was a composition of two sites; the first being a long field with a barn at one end, and the second being a small, heavily wooded area. this project dealt with the idea of the wall, or a threshold that would be placed between the two opposing sites in order to create a transition between the two. in my approach, i decided to make the visual relationships between the two sites my key interest. since the sites in many ways are quite different, i wanted to give vision of the two sites separately. this was achieved through the circulation through the wall. as one initially approaches the wall, one is addressed by a series of closely spaced slats, giving small glimpses of the spaces beyond. these slats lead to a ramp which leads the subject up to the above level where they are immediately released to an unobstructed view of the opposing site. as the subject moves along the upper pathway though, the upper, less closely spaced slats, switch sides, drawing the subjects eyes to the open space, being that which they just came from. as the subject then rounds the corner, they are again addressed by another view to the new site, which is just a ramp descent away.
